Pope John Paul II established Kalyan Diocese through a special decree on 30thApril 1988. Mar Paul Chittilapilly was consecrated as the first Bishop of Kalyan eparchy, on 24th Aug. 1988. During the inaugural function of the diocese Mar Paul Chittilappilly named Kalyan (E) parish after patron saint Bartholomew, as that auspicious day coincides with the feast of St. Batholomew, who has preached in India, especially in Kalyan.
Now after two decades of formation of our parish St. Batholomew Church is blessed with more than 310 families. Rev, Fr. George Edakalathur was appointed the 1st Parish Priest followed by Rev. Fr. George Porathur. At the beginning itself, parishioners started working for the construction of the church. Appointment of Fr. Varghese Manavalan gave a good leap in fulfilling the dream by acquiring a plot. Under his guidance, optimistic parishioners raised funds through various programmes. After
3 years of service, Fr. Varghese Manavalan was transferred and Fr. Thomas Thaikoottathil took charge in Sept. 1993. During his tenure, a plan had been finalized and submitted to KADMC in 1993. In Feb. 1994, Rev. Fr. George Cheerakuzhy took charge as Parish Priest of the parish and during his period we could obtain KDMC approval for constructing a community centre. On 02-02-1997, a flat was purchased at Vithalwadi and converted into a chapel.
In June 1997, Rev. Fr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan was appointed as Parish Priest. His enthusiasm and dedication motivated the parishioners to commence the construction work. His Excellency Mar Paul Chittilapilly, the outgoing Bishop of Kalyan laid the foundation stone in the presence of Mar Thomas Elavanal, the bishop elect.
Finally on 31st October 1999, the long- awaited dream of Kalyan East parishioners was fulfilled when Mar Thomas Elavanal blessed the newly constructed Church. Fr. Sebastian was transferred and Fr. Sunil Kadaparambil took charge of the parish. During his tenure diocese started a school on the top floor of the Church building and later on the adjacent plot a separate building was constructed for the school. A grotto was constructed at the courtyard of the church.
