The origin and growth of Christians at Dombivli-Thakurli can be traced to the 1960s when a few migrant catholic families settled down in the township. One of the initial activities of the new Diocese was to purchase a flat in Ambika Palace (Flat No.D-10), near Dombivli Station and appoint two priests having jurisdiction from Thane to Titwala and Karjat. One of them is the First Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Church, Dombivili, Rev. Fr. George Edakkalathur. Dombivli Parish started functioning from 6th September 1988 from Ambika Palace.
The Holy Qurbana was celebrated at Jondhale School and Don Bosco School, who allowed us to conduct Qurbana on Sundays and Saturdays respectively. Once the Convent was established, it was very convenient to conduct Holy Qurbana daily in the school hall. Immediate and most- felt need of Immaculate Conception Church, Dombivli, of Syro-Malabar Catholics was to have an independent Prayer / Community Centre. The beginning was made with the purchase of a plot of land in MIDC and the foundation stone of the prayer/Community centre was laid by Mar. Paul Chittilappilly on 30th March 1990.
It is with pride and joy that we remember our First Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. George Edakulathur, who infused a sense of dedication in the minds of our parishioners and pioneered the completion of the construction of the prayer / Community Centre.
The Parish Centre (Amalalayam) was blessed on Sunday, the 8th December 1991 by Mar Paul Chittilapilly.
A long cherished desire of the parishioners was fulfilled with the inauguration of St. Therese Convent run by C.M.C. Sisters of Nirmala Province with a view to start a school. The convent was established on 17th January 1991 with Sr. Philiphine, Superior, Sr. Probus and Sr. Vinaya.
Since we had around 600 families at that time we were conducting gatherings, Christmas and Easter etc. at Bharat Natya Mandir or other suitable places. In the meantime, by 2006, a plot of land in Dombivli West was finalised and registration had been done.
After Rev. Fr. Paul Olickal took over charge as parish priest, he along with the Core Committee Members, visited several plots in Dombivli East and zeroed in on the present plot in Dawdi Village and finalised the same and registration of the same was done in the name of Santhome Charitable Trust of Kalyan in May 2007. On 8th December 2008, Foundation Stone for the new Church Building at Dawdi Village, Dombivli East had been laid by Mar Thomas Elavanal. On 25th September 2009 Lourde Matha’s statue was blessed at Lourdes International Pilgrimage Centre. The statue was brought and installed at our Church on 2nd October 2009 with a grand procession lead by Mar Thomas Elavanal.
Construction of the Church was completed as per schedule and the Church was consecrated on 8th December 2009, by Mar Thomas Elavanal. Rev. Fr. Jose Kokkopuzha took charge with effect from 1.6.2010.
