Little Flower Church, Mahatma Nagar

When Kalyan Diocese came into existence, St. Mary’s Church, Nashik City, was built for all the Syro-Malabar Christians of the Nasik Zone, Fr. Peter Kavumpuram and Fr. Cyriac Chandrankunnel extended their spiritual services as the Parish Priest and Assistant Parish Priest respectively.

With the purpose of helping the parish members in their spiritual growth, the Parish was divided into different units. Mahatmanagar unit accepted St. Theresa as their patron saint and named the unit as ‘Little Flower Unit’. Rev. Fathers and unit members who were working for the welfare of the people approached the Kilbil School sisters and got the permission to conduct the catechism classes and Holy Qurbana on every Saturday evening without fail.

During the tenure of Fr. Shibu Pulickal, Little Flower unit purchased a small plot. After that, Fr. Mathew Moothasseril took interest in purchasing another plot by selling the old one and forwarded the plan of building the Church. The next Parish Priest Fr. Francis Perumadan continued his work and on 23-06-2007, Mar Thomas Elavanal laid the foundation stone for the church. On 05-10-2008, Mar Thomas Elavanal consecrated the chapel. The priests of St. Mary’s continued their service for the unit.

Fr. Binoy Kannanaikal who was the Assistant Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Church was appointed as the first Parish Priest of three churches i.e. Mahatmanagar, Satpur and Pavan Nagar. On 10-01-2010, Mar Thomas Elavanal blessed the priest residence and Fr. Binoy Kannanaikal took his charge on 02-10-2010 as the Parish Priest. After his tenure, we had Fr. Francis Komban as the parish priest. At present Fr. Jenson Porathur is the Parish Priest.

By sowing a deep faith in the next generation, the Marthoma Christians of Little Flower Church is practising and experiencing the traditions of Syro-Malabar Church.
