Keraliates have migrated to all parts of the world and Vasai was no exception. St. Michael’s Church, Manicpur was the only option for the Syro-Malabar Catholics, however, Sunday Mass was only in Marathi.
That’s when Kerala Catholic Association (KCA) which had already existed at that time, took the initiative in getting Malayalee priests to conduct Holy Qurbana in Syro-Malabar Rite. Msgr. Thomas Thalachira, Fr. Jacob Porathur and Fr George Vadakkethala were the priests in the initial stage.
Rev. Fr. Varghese Nadackal was appointed as the first parish priest of Vasai after the establishment of the diocese of Kalyan in 1988. In the following year, 1989, with the help of the diocese a flat was purchased and Qurbana was held there. In the same year, sisters of the Holy Family Congregation came to Vasai and started their convent.
On 1st June, 1992, Fr. Sebastian Vazhappilly took charge as parish priest. Vasai Syro Malabar Community has grown large and could not accommodate all in the flat for the Qurbana, so the Qurbana was conducted in different places like Nirmala Matha Convent, St. Michael’s Church.
In May 1994 Fr. Davis Thattil took charge and it was under his tenure we purchased land on which the present church was constructed.
On 20th October, 1998 Mar Paul Chittilappilly laid the foundation stone for the church. Fr. Sebastian Pothenparambil took charge as parish priest in July 1999. With the tireless efforts of Fr. Sebastian, we got permission to build a grand church in the way it is now. The construction of the church started on 8th September 2001. Until 2001 Vasai East and Vasai West were one.
On 21st Feb 2007 Fr. Jose Kokkopuzha took charge as parish priest. He was entrusted to complete the remaining work of the church. Under his guidance and leadership of Adhoc Committee, construction work was resumed and completed the parish hall and church services started there on 3rd July 2008.
On Sunday 12th October 2008 Bl. Alphonsa was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI. On the following Saturday i.e. 18th Oct 2008 the church was consecrated by Mar Thomas Elavanal.
On 1st June 2010, Fr. Sheen Chittattukara took charge as Parish Priest. He has done a tremendous job of uniting the community together.
