St. Alphonsa Welfare Centre, Pen

In the year 1989 realizing the spiritual & sacramental needs of the four families here, Msgr. Thomas Thalachira from Nerul came over here and offered the first Holy Qurbana at Mr. P.C. Jose’s residence at Ramvadi and two children received their First Holy Communion on the same day. Thereafter, amidst his busy schedule, Fr. Thalachira found time to offer the Holy Qurbana for us once in a month. For better convenience, the Centre for Holy Qurbana was shifted to Mr. P.P. Chacko’s house. The centre for Qurbana was again shifted to Mr. Jose’s residence. At this time Fr. John Madukoly took over the charge here. The presence of the CMC Sisters at the early stage itself was indeed a blessing for the faithful. Mar Paul Chittilappilly appointed Fr. Lonappan Arangarssery on 1st July 1991 as their Chaplian to look after the spiritual needs of the sisters and the faithful here. Then on Fr. Lonappan offered the Holy Qurbana on every Sunday. Realizing the need of the locality, they have started an English Medium School.

By this time Rev. Fr. Jose Thannipara took over the charge and the Holy Qurbana was celeberated in the Convent Chapel every Sunday. We gratefully acknowledge services rendered by dear fathers like Fr. Abraham Kollithadathil, Fr. Francis John, Fr. Xavier Kadaplackal, Fr. Mathew Kollamparambil between the years 1995-98.

The foundation stone for the church was laid by Rev. Fr. Jose Kokkopuzha and Fr. Johnson Kalathingal. Under the able leadership of Fr. Johnson Kalathingal, church construction started. The Bl. Alphonsa church was blessed and consecrated by Mar Thomas Elavanal on 01-04-2001. The fathers from Panvel and Khopoli used to come to offer the Holy Qurbana. Our words are insufficient to thank our dear Fr. Johnson Olakkengil, Fr Paul Olickal, Jospeh Pazhayaveetil and Tom Vadakkekara for their marvellous service in bringing up various activities in the church between the period of 2001 and 2007.

The arrival of Fr. Siju Kizhakkepallivathukal, on 2nd Feb. 2008 was really a great blessing. With the support of all faithful, he beautified the church in a short span. His successor was Fr. Shinto Vallanttu. During his pastoral visit on 19th July 2009, Mar Thomas Elavanal officially declared that St. Alphonsa parish, Pen is elevated to the judicial status of a parish in the Eparchy of Kalyan.
