Syro-Malabar Catholic community in Panvel had about seven families till the 80’s. They used to attend Latin service at St. Francis Xavier Community Centre at Old Panvel. At the preparatory level, Malayalam services were offered by Msgr. Thomas Thalachira and Fr. John Madukoly MST. There were times when Holy Qurbana was conducted in residential flats and other rented commercial premises in New Panvel. Later on, they contacted the founders of St. Francis Church, opposite to Panvel Bus Station and got permission to conduct the services on Sundays on a regular basis.
In the second half of the 90’s, the assemblies were shifted to the new church building adjacent to the old structure, and by then the number of the church members started growing rapidly. Gradually the parish grew in to a much larger community which found even the new premises quite insufficient. With the continuous efforts of parish priests and laity members, St. George trust was offered a plot by CIDCO at sector 19, in New Panvel East in the year 2005. Foundation stone was laid on 23.04.2006 by Mar Thomas Elavanal. A long-cherished dream of Syro-Malabar Catholics came true on 22.04.2007, when the present church was consecrated by Mar Thomas Elavanal. The number of parishioners grew steadily and rapidly over the years and as on today the parish has 289 registered families.
The church has become a very active community service centre with multifarious activities promoting communal harmony and social development. Good Samaritan services which include free medical aid, sponsoring educational needs of the poor and a dispensary which looks after patients of poor sections of the locality are provided without fail. Under the able and spiritual guidance of our parish priest, Fr. Shaji Parickappallil and Asst.Parish Priest Fr.Thomas Parakkathottiyil , the parish is making giant strides in all walks of Christian faith and conviction in and around of panvel areas. In the parish level we are running Malayalam classes in the leader ship of unit Mathrusangam. Senior citizens are providing breakfast for catechism children and teachers in Sundays.
