Before the formation of the Kalyan Diocese, the small catholic community had an opportunity to organize regular Qurbana on Sundays with the goodwill of the local Latin Parish and the generosity of the priests, Fr. Gabinus and Fr. Antony Kariyil of Carmel Vidya Bhavan, Pune. It was on Sunday 3rd March 1984, that the Syro-Malabar Qurbana was offered by Rev. Fr. Justin CMI at St. Joseph’s Church, Lonavla. The CMI fathers continued their helping hand till the formation of Kalyan Diocese in the year 1988. Then onwards, regular Malayalam Qurbana in Syro-Malabar Rite is being celebrated on Sundays at St. Joseph’s Church, Lonavla.
After the formation of Kalyan Diocese, Lonavla Parish came under the jurisdiction of Kalewadi Church. Rev. Fr. Davis Pulikottil was the Parish Priest. Holy Qurbana was conducted every Sunday at St. Joseph’s Church Lonavla. Mar. Paul Chittilapilly, the Bishop of Kalyan understood the desire of the Lonavla Syro-Malabar Community for having a place of their own for worship and initiated the purchase of land in 1996, in Nagargaon , situated at the heart of Lonavla. Rev. Fr. Jose Vazhakalayil took over as Parish Priest in the year 2005 and took initiative to construct the church. The foundation stone was laid by Mar. Thomas Elavanal on April 9th 2006. Within a span of 8 months the construction of the church completed and the church was consecrated by Mar Thomas Elavanal on November 5th 2006.
Catechism classes were started from the year 2007-08. In the year 2008 we constructed the Mother Mary’s Grotto Adjoining area of the church on the north side has been converted to a community hall in the year 2012 which is now being used for parish functions. Two family units were formed in the year 2012. At present Fr. Francis John Mundappillyel is the parish priest.
