St. Theresa’s Church, Kandivli (W)

In 1985, Rev Fr. Paul B Kadicheeni C.M.I., at the xrequest of Rev. Fr. Edward, started to celebrate Holy Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite at Our Lady Of Assumption Church, Dahnukarwadi. This practice was continued by Fr. George Vadakkethala.

After the establishment of the Diocese of Kalyan, Fr. Thomas Chirackal, and Fr. Paul B Kadacheeni C.M.I served as Parish Preiests. Then the Parish Council decided to have blessed Cyriac Chavara as the Patron of the Parish and the Holy See granted the permission for the same.

From 1989 onwards Congregation of Sisters of Charity from Jesu Bhavan, Malad East began to help in the Parish. As the catholic population increased, a Mass center was started at Kandivali East.

From April 7, 1994 onwards parish activities of Kandivali east were conducted at Chavara Welfare Centre of the Parish at Singh Estate, Near Samta Nagar. Kandivali East. Kandivali East and Kandivali West were divided as Two Parishes in 1997 by the letter of His Excellency Mar Paul Chittilappilly, the First Bishop of Kalyan Diocese and allowed to have St. Therese’s of Lisieux as the Patron of Kandivali West Parish.

St. Therese’s Welfare Trust was registered on 11.11.1998. The Liturgy was celebrated at Room nos 44, 45, 46 and 001, Plot No. 263, Shiv Sahyadri CHS, Sector-2, Charkop, Kandivali West, Mumbai 400067.

The Parish Started a Nursery School in 1988 for rendering educational service to the neighborhood. Mrs. Mary David was the First Teacher in the school.

On 04th Nov 2007 in the General Meeting the members had decided to build a big church at Plot No. 263, Shiv Sahyadri CHS, Sector-2, Charkop, Kandivali West, Mumbai 400067 by joining all the 4 rooms together. After starting the work there were protests raised from various groups nearby and the society itself against the construction of the Church. Nevertheless the constant and restless effort of the priests, trustees, parish council members and parishners, the society did not allowed to construct the building.

Finally on the condition of not using the building for religious activities the society allowed to complete the construction.

At present the building kept idle and the parish conducting Holy Qurbana, catechism at Bunder Pakkadi Chapel under Our Lady Of Assumption Church, Dahnukarwadi, Bombay Archdiocese. As realizing the fact that the future of the Parish is questioned, it has been decided in the Annual General Body Meeting of April, 2012, to get the Parish merged with that of Poinsur, to form a big community.

We gratefully remember the priests who served us. They are Rev. Fr. Paul B Kadicheeni CMI, Rev. Fr. George Vadakkethala, Rev. Fr. Thomas Chirackal M.S.T., Rev. Fr. John Paliakkara C.M.I., Rev. Fr.
