Soon after the inauguration of the Diocese of Kalyan Msgr. Thomas Thalachira was appointed as the Priest-in-charge of Navi Mumbai area consisting of Airoli, Koperkhairne, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kalamboli and Panvel. Staying at Nerul he established Church centres upto Alibaug-Raigad. Later on he was assisted by Rev. Fr. John Madukoli.
After taking over the charge of Vashi and Koperkhairne, Msgr. Thomas Thalachira convened a meeting of the parishioners and constituted the parish council consisting of 23 members and the new centre was named as St. Thomas Church. The parish area with a strength of more than 205 families were grouped into 14 family units and meetings were held in each unit every month. Later on the number of family units were brought down to 11 for convenience and greater co-ordination.
During the tenure of Rev. Fr. Varghese Nadakal, Sisters of Destitute Convent started functioning at 5-Mehul, Sector-14, Vashi.
Since there was no church, the Sunday Holy Qurbana was initially conducted at Sacred Heart High School hall at Sector-4, and later shifted to the church constructed at Sector 9-A. During the tenure of Fr. Thomas Narikulam a CIDCO flat was purchased at E-I-I, Sector-5, Vashi which was used as priests’s residence. Holy Qurbana was conducted there on week-days.
Annual day, Feast of Dukhrana etc. are celebrated in a grand way every year. Organisations such as Mathrusangham, Youth, Catechism etc. are very active.
Former Parish Priest / Priests worked in the Parish: Msgr. Thomas Talachira, Fr. Varghese Nadackal (MST), Fr. Lonappan Arangassery MST, Fr. Thomas Narikulam, Fr. Jose Aloor, Fr. Denson Neraparambil, Fr. Thomas Thaikoottathil (MST), Fr. Paul Olickal, Fr. Benny Ezhormattom, Fr. Siju Kizhakkepallivathukkal and Jinto Edattukunnel. Fr. John Koovakunnel served as an Asst. Parish Priest for a short term.
At present Fr. Benny Thaninilkumthadathil is the Parish Priest.
